Queensland Sleep Disorders Unit (QSDU) formed in Brisbane in 1995 has five Brisbane partners, Drs McEvoy, Bowler, McKeon, Kelly, Armstrong, and partners in Townsville, Dr John Binder and Cairns, Dr Graham Simpson. John Armstrong, Brisbane, and John Binder, Townsville, are Level 2 accredited and all others are Level 1 accredited. We perform about 450 sleep studies per month in Queensland of which 150-200 are home-based studies. Home-based studies were developed over the last two years and more, to provide sleep diagnostic services in areas where no facility existed and they have been extended to areas where a predominance of uninsured patients require an alternative facility to the Public Hospital system. Home-based sleep study patients and in-hospital overnight polysomnography patients are treated identically. All their clinical details are provided on an appropriate referral form. Each patient provides clinical details to the overnight technologist, including an Epworth Sleepiness score and medication lists, all are entered on our common database and booking system, and all are followed up by the staff at QSDU to provide CPAP support. Additionally, patients with no easy solution to sleep disordered breathing are contacted or their GP's are contacted by QSDU staff, including the consultants, to provide advice or arrange specialist referral where appropriate. The majority of our patients are referred from general practice (80%). |
